George Papagiannakis

CEO/CTO at ORamaVR

Assoc. Prof. George Papagiannakis is a computer scientist specialized in computer graphics and virtual-augmented reality. He obtained his PhD (Hons) in Computer Science at the University of Geneva in Switzerland in 2006, his M.Sc. (Hons) in Advanced Computing at the University of Bristol, UK and his B.Eng. (Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering, at the University of Manchester, UK.
He is associate professor at the Computer Science department of the University of Crete, Greece and Research Fellow at FORTH-ICS, where he leads the Computer Graphics Group. He has more than 70 publications in the field, and he is board member of the Computer Graphics Society (CGS), member of the IEEE, ACM, Eurographics and SIGGRAPH professional societies. He is associate editor of the Springer Visual Computer Journal, and evaluator/reviewer for the European Commission and other National Research Funding agencies. He served as Principal Investigator in six EU and national AR/VR projects and actively co-authored and participated more than ten.
In 2011 he has been awarded with a Marie-Curie Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development from the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency. In 2016 he served as Conference Chair of the 33rd Computer Graphics International (CGI’16) annual conference. In 2016 he also co-founded ORamaVR, a FORTH spin-off startup company in which he serves currently as CEO/CTO, providing novel medical VR experiential training. In 2017 he published a Springer-Nature book on Mixed Reality and Gamification which reached so far more than 41k downloads worldwide.
