VRTogether project partner TNO participated at the 10th ACM Multimedia Systems Conference (MMSys 2019), held from June 18 – 21, 2019 in Amherst, MA, USA. MMSys is the leading international forum for researchers to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems are regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating systems, real-time systems, databases, mobile computing, distributed systems, and middleware communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to investigate the intersections and the interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types.

On the 4th day of the conference, TNO’s team presented a demonstrator on Multi-Sensor Capture and Network Processing for Virtual Reality Conferencing. This demonstrator, a co-production between VRTogether and TNO’s research programme on Social Extended Reality, showcased ongoing work towards 6-degrees of freedom photo-realistic shared experiences by introducing a multiview, multi-sensor capture end-to-end system, on top of the web-based social VR platform developed within VR-Together. The immersive experience received very positive feedback from attendees and the organization, being eventually recognized with MMSys2019 Best Demo Award.

5G networks offer a substantial improvement over previous mobile network generations. As always for each new generation, more bandwidth is promised. But, 5G also offers improvement in other areas: ultra-low latency on the radio layer, distributed in-network processing with edge computing near the base stations, network slicing to offer improved quality guarantees, and a dynamic core network that integrates concepts such as SDN and NFV.

As such, 5G has much to offer for a variety of industries (also called ‘verticals’) and use cases. Virtual Reality and gaming are among the use case that are often mentioned. Both VR services and gaming require high performance and low latencies. For VR, low latencies are needed for immersion, as smooth and continuous playback needs to be guaranteed, also when using state-of-the-art streaming technologies that only stream the user’s current field of view. For gaming, the need for low latencies is clear to anyone who has played a real-time game.

For VR Communication services, such as being developed within the VR-Together consortium, these low latencies are also required end-to-end. Typically, the rule of thumb for end-to-end latencies required for good communication is 150 ms one-way, with up to 300 to 400 ms still being adequate for normal communication. For the VRTogether system for communication in VR, reaching such latencies is a real challenge, as we need to process all the captured images: for background removal, for HMD removal, for 3D reconstruction, for point cloud or time varying mesh encoding, and so on.

Thus, 5G networks may offer new infrastructure that can help building future communication services. Within 3GPP, many VR communication use cases are studied in the new 5G&XR study item (TR 26.928). The 1 ms latency on the radio layer will give a significant improvement already, but new technologies such as edge computing (e.g., for carrying out all this processing mentioned above) or slicing (for guaranteeing bandwidth and resource allocation during a communication session) may help achieve the requirements for these new immersive services.

The Dutch national news show for kids, Jeugdjournaal, recently explained new 5G networks based on the gaming use case. They brought 5 kids to the TNO Medialab to experience our shared VR experience as an example of how we build future immersive experiences. The enthusiasm of the kids was amazing, showing that the new generation is ready for a new generation of services and required infrastructure!

VR-Together will be present at Laval Virtual on 20 and 21 March 2019 to present the capabilities of the web-based pipeline for communicating and collaborating in photorealistic social immersive environments.

TNO will present the projects work on the web-based pipeline with a paper and talk. The talk will be presented by Tom De Koninck from TNO at Laval Virtual’s ConVRgence on 21st March at 16:40.

The paper (in publication), aligned to the talk, discusses the use of photorealistic representation of in virtual environments. While Virtual Reality applications become more multi-user experiences, mostly artificial avatars are used for the representation of users in the virtual environment. This is fine for many multi-user scenarios but is less than ideal in more social settings like talking to your family, friends or business partners.

The paper and presentation outline the concept of Social VR based on real-time photorealistic capture and representation of users. Particularly, the web-based framework that allows for both the creation and consumption of photo-realistic social VR in 3D and 360-degree environments is introduced.

Further, the system is evaluated both in a 360-degree remote collaborative meeting and in a full 3D experience. The initial results indicate that a photo-realistic approach indeed offers a natural communication to the users with a high presence and immersion.

The paper will be published in the VRIC’s 2019 proceedings.

A joint 3GPP SA4 & VR Industry Forum Workshop on VR Ecosystem and Standards took place in Santa Clara from 4th-6th December. Close to 150 participants from companies such as Apple, AT&T, Dolby, Ericsson, Intel, Movielabs, Oculus, Samsung, Qualcomm and Verizon attended sessions on standardisation coordination, VR content production, service provider and VR Hardware/device manufacturer challenges.

The workshop was co-chaired by Rob Koenen, VRIF President and Principal at VRTogether partner TNO. TNO further participated in the event by promoting Social VR, with Emmanuel Thomas showcasing an early-stage demo that allowed visitors to get a first feel for how the project partners will enable shared and social VR experiences. The participants provided useful feedback on the relevance of social VR and the demonstrated technology, and were keen to test and use further evolutions of the technology. Interestingly, many presenters talked about the need for making VR a more social experience.

VR-Together partner TNO demonstrated its initial social VR platform at VR Days EU 2017 in Amsterdam on 24-26 october. Two visitors had the opportunity to visit and share a virtual living room, play a game of Blobby Volley and experience social VR first-hand.

In collaboration with CWI, a survey was held and over 90 visitors shared their views on our demonstration and social VR in general. In addition, TNO’s Martin Prins enlightened the visitors in an expert session on social VR (The Next Level of Human Communication or Just Another ‘Home Alone?’), where he shared the stage with Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life and High Fidelity.

VR Days Europe is the leading European AR/VR event, focusing on Virtual and Augmented content, creativity and innovation. With ~1700 professional visitors, it was the perfect event to start creating awareness for the project.

VR Together partners TNO, i2CAT, CWI and Viaccess-Orca attended the NEM Summit 2017 to showcase first project results. An early-stage demo, created by TNO, allowed visitors to get a first feel for how the project partners will enable shared and social VR experiences. Many visitors took the opportunity to watch content in a virtual living room, where they were joined by a remote guide (Rob Koenen from TNO) for an explanation of social VR and the project aims. Visitors were enthusiastic about the demo and saw great possibilities for enhancing social cohesion and enabling remote conferencing. The NEM exhibition jury was equally impressed and unanimously decided to give the Best Exhibition Award to VR-Together.

The NEM Initiative, the New European Media Technology Platform, was organizing the 10th edition of the NEM Summit in Madrid. The conference addressed many of today’s hot topics related to media and creative industries, such as research and business challenges, societal and user needs including accessibility, implementation requirements for smart content and media convergence, and the regulatory and standardization environment for media.
